Obituary for RAY OSBORNE NUTT (3/28/1924-1/26/2015) aged 90 years Ray Osborne Nutt (son of Glenn and Adele Nutt) succumbed to pneumonia early Monday morning January 26, 2015 at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland California. He entered the hospital Friday, January 23, 2015 and was able to enjoy the company of all four of his daughters from Louisiana, Montana, Northern and Southern California over the weekend before his sudden passing at approximately 4am on Monday. Ray Nutt was a Rice Graduate in Civil Engineering enrolled in Naval ROTC who served in WWII on the troop ship USS Adair in the Pacific Theatre via the Panama Canal. Ensign Nutt served as boat officer transporting troops to shore on the initial landing at Okinawa. His ship earned two battle stars for Luzon and Okinawa. After serving on this ship from its commissioning in Norfolk, VA through the end of hostilities, he married Valeta Jo McCoy in San Diego, CA. A life long career with the Santa Fe Railroad followed with frequent relocations that culminated in responsibilities in the Sante Fe RR home office in Chicago, IL. He received public recognition for innovations of aerial photography and ultramodern methods used in the design and installation of the new track from Dallas to Chicago in 1955. He is survived by: his wife Valeta; four daughters Beverly Mitchell, Cynthia VanSlogteren, Anita Greenwood, and Barbara Leitch; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Ray was born in Topeka, KS 3/28/1924, graduated from Amarillo High School in 1940 and retired in 1979 to enjoy interests in music, geology, math, horseracing, seeking the perfect place to live, and watching his family grow and thrive. Scores of his family are traveling from Texas, Montana, Idaho and as far as the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and Radio City Music Hall in New York City to gather this Fri/Sat in Rancho Cucamonga in his honor. Internment arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Pacific Legal Foundation or The Salvation Army.
